Google Tips You May Not Know About

Did you know that

  • Using quotation marks around your search terms searches those terms as a phrase, e.g., "owl spirituality"? This is useful for searching unique or specific concepts.
  • Using the syntax intitle:keyword allows you to search for a keyword within the title of the document only? Note: do not enter a space after the colon.
  • Searching define:word (e.g., define:existentialism) will bring up definitions

New Database: SimplyMap Canada

I'm pleased to note that we now have access to the database, SimplyMap Canada.

SimplyMap Canada is a web-based mapping application that allows researchers to create thematic maps based on demographic, research, and business data. It does not require GIS experience and is exceptionally easy to use. Datasets of particular interest include 2006 Adjusted Canadian Census Data and Demographic Estimates and Projections (DEP) from Environics Analytics.

SFU Library, the Student Learning Commmons (SLC), and Campus IT offer a wide range of workshops, consultations, and self-guided instructional tools for both undergraduate and graduate students, such as:

  • Library Research Workshops
  • Workshops on MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Read ahead services for graduate students
  • One-on-one consultations at the SLC to improve your writing

Workshops are free, and all levels of SFU students are encouraged to attend!

Spring 2012 RefWorks Workshops

Please join us for a free RefWorks workshop at SFU Library. Workshops will be held on Wednesday, February 8th and Thursday, February 9th at 4:30pm, Burnaby campus library. No need to register--just drop in!.

Additionally, RefWorks for Graduate Students will be offered on February 22nd at 10:00am, Burnaby Campus Library, and on Friday, February 24th at 1:00pm, at the Harbour Centre building.

RefWorks is a web-based citation management program that SFU students, faculty, and staff can use to store, manage and export citations from. Use RefWorks to keep track of your references/citations from the library's catalogue and online article indexes and databases.

You can also use RefWorks to help you format your citations and bibliographies instantly with MS Word in a variety of styles (APA, MLA, Chicago...plus many more).

New Subscription to FnT in Communication and Information Theory

I'm pleased to let you know that we now have an online subscription (including backfiles) to Foundations and Trends in Communication and Information Theory

From the journal's homepage:

Each issue of Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory will comprise a 50-100 page monograph written by research leaders in the field. Monographs that give tutorial coverage of subjects, research retrospectives as well as survey papers that offer state-of-the-art reviews fall within the scope of the journal.
