CITIZENShift's call for content: "Olympic Footprint"

"Olympic Footprint is CITIZENShift's call for media on how you see the Olympics:

  • Does the goodwill it's meant to foster outweigh local criticism?
  • What kind of 'footprints' (environmental, economic, social, etc) are the Vancouver games leaving on that city and what kinds of 'footprints' have past Olympics left on other hosting cities?

We're looking for stories that tell how the Olympics are impacting life in BC, across Canada and around the world, before, during and after the games have gone.

The dossier, which is being co-produced with the National Film Board, will go online in late January/early February 2010."

Proposal deadline: January 22, 2010.

The Effect of the Global Economic Recession on Canada's Creative Economy in 2009

"The global recession is expected to reduce revenues for cultural enterprises by approximately $3.1 billion in 2009".

Prepared by the Conference Board of Canada for the Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC, this report measures the impact of the current recession on the cultural sector.

The report estimates that the global recession will reduce average employment earnings of workers in the culture sector by 2.2 per cent in 2009. The report also notes that the number of self-employed workers in creative and artistic production occupations is expected to grow while revenues fall. As a result, real employment earnings for workers in these occupations (including the self-employed and employees) are expected to fall by 3.5 per cent, on average.

The report is the first in a series of three reports that the Conference Board is working on for CHRC, the other two being: a Labour Market Information report for the cultural sector (to be released in December 2009); and an identification and analysis of Human Resource issues and trends in the cultural sector (to be released in June 2010).

21st Century Cities in Canada: The Geography of Innovation

A new Conference Board of Canada report may interest scholars investigating the impact of culture and innovation in Canadian urban settings.

"21st Century Cities in Canada: The Geography of Innovation summarizes the key insights and findings of a multi-year national study on urban industrial clusters, led by internationally renowned urban expert David Wolfe, Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. Professor Wolfe’s monograph delineates the innovation dynamic, based on in-depth analysis of the experiences of 15 Canadian cities. 21st Century Cities in Canada explores the ways in which the economic shock of the past year has dramatized the changing nature of Canada's economy, and it looks at the challenges that lie ahead. The monograph also sheds new light on the role of cities as the dominant sites of economic activity—the places where leading-edge innovation generates new ideas, new products, and new industries."
